Outcome 6 (Sentence-Level Error) – Control sentence-level error (grammar, punctuation, spelling)
Throughout my time in high school I never revised my work, leading to a lot of sentence-level errors in my writing. My grammar and punctuation has never been the best, but thanks to spell check my spelling is alright. However, this semester I have been taught the importance and how to revise. One thing I have realized when revising my work is that I use commas maybe more than I need to. After reworking several sentences and seeing professor Brods edits on my papers, I think I have improved a lot on my comma use. In my thesis for my second paper the use of commas I believe really helped structure the sentence.
You can see that even though I have two commas, they still really help the sentence structure and making sure the sentence makes sense.
Another sentence-level error that is kind of tied into my past problem with commas was comma alternatives. This was always a struggle for me, especially because I had no clue how to use a semicolon correctly. However, this semester I learned that I can use a semicolon to connect two separate but related clauses. For example, in my second paper I use a semicolon. (see image below)
I still don’t completely know when to correctly use a semicolon, but I think this really shows my improvement throughout this semester. That is because before this semester I would have never even thought about using a semicolon.
